Heaven vs Hell was a pretty well produced event that, like most in recent memory went off without too many hangups visible to the standard party goer. This seems to mean that either promoters are handling their business MUCH better or that they’ve learned to do a better job of hiding them from the public. Lighting was done pretty well, but I’m pretty sure it’s going to be the same light we’ll be seeing at most parties at Area Phoenix, being as it was the built in house lighting.

The sound in the main room was pretty good, but overly bass-heavy. There were 3 sub cabs and 1 high-pack per side. That’s just a little overwhelming on a single end of the spectrum. Outside the sound was pretty clear and though I didnt spend a great deal of time out there, I did enjoy the time I did spend.

While I was outside, I got to catch some of what Matthew Harris was throwing down and danced about a bit. Say what you may about him being booked constantly, but watch one of his sets and realize it probably has something to do with the way he commands a huge following and has the mixing skill and track selection to keep the crowd moving the entire time he’s on the decks.

Crowd migration was amusing at this event. When Matt went on outside, the inside crowd drained, and when he went off and Spunky took over the inside stabe, there was a mass exodus to see her play. Her energy level was pretty intense and it was great to watch her explore the various forms of hardcore. I can’t wait to be at her party in Texas and watch how she manipulates that crowd.

This was the first party I brought the new Canon G9 to shoot with. I sold my sony and don’t like bringing my big pro rig to parties anymore. Hopefully the image quality has improved quite a bit!
